From the Desk of Dean Matthew J. Wilson
It is a great honor to have been named as the eleventh Dean of The University of Akron School of Law. Not only do I welcome the opportunity to build upon the strong foundation established by my predecessors, but I also look forward to infusing even greater energy and innovative ideas into our law school.
By way of introduction, I have 25 years of diverse experience in law, education, and business in the U.S., Asia, and the Pacific. Over the past decade, I enjoyed serving as a faculty member and senior administrator for the University of Wyoming and Temple University. As a practicing attorney, I have worked as a commercial litigator at Akerman Senterfitt (Florida), general counsel of Advanced Telecommunication Network/YPD.com (New Jersey/Florida), and general counsel of Temple University Japan Campus (Tokyo). I have also served as a litigation consultant and expert witness in relation to numerous cross-border disputes. My areas of expertise include international business law, intellectual property law, litigation, international dispute resolution, negotiations, comparative law, and Japanese law.
Akron Law is an outstanding institution with many exceptional qualities. In my new capacity, it is my intention to diligently work to enhance these qualities, further the success of the law school, and expand its influence across the state, nation, and world. To achieve these objectives, it will take a collective effort. Working together with you and other stakeholders, I am confident that we can significantly strengthen our institution as a team and improve upon the great things that already characterize Akron Law. I have quickly discovered that our law school has special strengths including highly committed faculty and staff, a capable student body, exceedingly loyal alumni, and quality programs. We also have a very distinguished history and rich tradition. I personally invite you to join me in paving the way for our future graduates to become great lawyers and exceptional members of society.
Our collective energy will not only help make future success and progress achievable, but it will also enable us to effectively navigate through rough waters. Unfortunately, we cannot escape the fact that we face an environment in higher education filled with significant challenges. Among other things, law school applicants have contracted to levels not seen in forty years. This has caused many concerns and increasing competition among law schools. Fortunately, Akron Law has the pieces in place to provide current and future students with a quality, practical education at an affordable price. Unlike many other institutions, our job placement rates have been high and our student success on the bar examination has been commendable. Notwithstanding, we face the reality of a significantly smaller incoming class this year. I am a firm believer though that challenges breed opportunity.
Through improved marketing and enhanced student recruiting, we will spread the news about the many advantages of studying at Akron Law to prospective students and employers. To gain a greater competitive edge though, we plan on soliciting your ideas and support in terms of training, mentoring, employment opportunities, and the continued development of educational experiences that will both excite students and meet evolving needs in the market. We also need your help in renovating our building. This is crucial not only to attract quality students to Akron Law, but also to enable us to better provide our students with a cutting-edge experiential learning experience that prepares them for the practice of law. With dated facilities, we unnecessarily run the risk of losing quality students to other institutions. Your contributions in all of these areas are greatly appreciated.
I look forward to tirelessly serving you, our students, The University of Akron School of Law, and the legal community. To the extent that I can be of any assistance to you professionally or personally, please do not hesitate to contact me. In fact, one of my primary goals is to explore ways in which Akron Law can increase its service to you. Please know that my door is always open, so please stop by to say hello.
